The first Ukrainian restaurant in DMV area

RUTA is the first Ukrainian restaurant in the DMV area. Our goal is for RUTA to be an ambassador of Ukrainian culture through the richness of Ukrainian cuisine.
At our restaurant, we combine classic Ukrainian dishes such as Borscht, Holubtsi, and Varenyky with modern fusion options, reflecting the evolution of Ukrainian society and its resilience and strength.
RUTA opened its doors in April 2023, with our first location in Southeast Washington, DC. In August 2024, we began our operations in Bethesda, Maryland.
RUTA’s Honey Cake won the 2024 People’s Choice Award at the Best of Washington event, hosted by Washingtonian magazine.
In 2025, RUTA’s Black Currant Nalyvka won 1st place for Best Beverage at the DC Embassy Chef Challenge.
WHY
RUTA?
"Ruta" is more than just a beautifully sounding word—it’s a flower deeply rooted in ancient Ukrainian myths and legends.
Carpathian folklore tells us that the real "Red Ruta" is actually a yellow flower. Only on the magical night of Ivana Kupala does it turn flaming red for a few fleeting minutes. According to legend, whoever finds and plucks the flower during that brief moment will be blessed with true love.
We hope our "Ruta" becomes your true love too🇺🇦

RUTA broke a world record
We were thrilled to be part of Best of Washington by Washingtonian magazine! And even more excited to steal the show with the most impressive feat of the night: creating the world’s BIGGEST HOLUBETS!
Weighing 137 kg (302 lbs), measuring 44 by 22 inches, and stuffed with 1,830 small holubtsi, this culinary masterpiece set a new record and showcased the heart and soul of Ukrainian cuisine.
